Abstract
Background: Female cosmetic genital surgery (FGCS) is the newest and fastest growing subspecialty within the broad specialty of gynecology. The demand for it is growing rapidly. Aim: To explore the level of knowledge of cosmetic procedures and surgeries among gynecologists in training in Abidjan. Method: We conducted a cross-sectional study over three (3) months from February 1 to April 30, 2022 in Abidjan. All gynecologists-obstetricians in training were included on a voluntary basis after information
and consent. A quiz was sent to them via email and WhatsApp using the Google form tool. A descriptive analysis of the results was performed. The results were analyzed by applying the Students t-test, and the correlations were significant for a p value < 0.05.
Results: Out of 105 gynecologists in training, 49 responded to our survey, i.e. a 46% participation rate. The average age was 33.5 years. The sex ratio Men/Female was 2.3. Among them, 88% claimed to have heard of it before, half of them (51.2%). These procedures were performed for medical reasons in 25%, by gynecologists only in 30%, with surgical means only in 63%. They were considered ethical and justifiable in 57% and 63% of cases respectively. Conclusion: Our study demonstrated a low level of knowledge and a need for capacity building of gynecologists in training for vulvovaginal procedures and surgery.
