Abstract

Introduction : Cervical smear screening for cervical cancer is an effective way to reduce cervical cancer mortality in our country. We report in this work, the experience of the Thiès region about 1388 cases of cervical smear examined.

Patients and Methods: This is a retrospective study covering a period of 03 years from June 1, 2015 to

May 31, 2018. It was based on patient records collected at two (2) hospitals in the Thiès region. Included were all  reports  of  anatomical-pathological examination  of  cervical smears

Results: During this study period, there were 1,388 cervical smears. The average age at diagnosis was 44.2 years with extremes ranging from 16 to 77 years. The majority of women have more than 3 children, and did not use contraception. The cervix was healthy in 60% of cases. Inderterminate atypia were found in 16 patients and carcinomas in 12 patients.

Conclusion : smear screening for cervical cancer is a public health priority. It is important to carry out actions adapted to the populations in order to facilitate their access to screening.
