Abstract

Introduction Maternal mortality is a major public health issue in developing countries.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to identify factors that are associated with maternal deaths in BorgouAlibori regional teaching hospital (CHUD / B-A). Framework and methodologies: It was a descriptive, analytical and retrospective study conducted on the medical files of women in the gravidopuerperal period in CHUD/B-A from 2014 to 2016. Data analysis was carried out through logistic regression by calculating Odds Ratios with 95% confidence interval. Outcome: From 2014 to 2016, a total of 6,015 women were seen during the gravido-puerperal period in CHUD/B-A, including 82 maternal deaths representing 1.36% in-hospital mortality rate. Maternal mortality ratio was 1,524 deaths per 100,000 live births (LB) and 46.34% of deaths occurred during pregnancy. Factors associated with maternal deaths among women with good state of consciousness were delayed reporting to hospital (OR=5.12 ; p<0.001), the admission method (OR=2.68; p=0.034) and the provision of healthcare by a gynecologist or doctor (OR=31.47; p<0.001) whereas delayed reporting to hospital (OR=10,72 ; p=0.002) was the only associated factor among women with bad state of consciousness.
Conclusion: There is need to take further actions to reduce maternal deaths rate in CHUD-B by focusing on the associated factors.
