Abstract

Objective: To study obstetric emergencies in the department of Gynecology and Obstetrics in the Regional University Hospital Center of Ouahigouya (CHUR/OHG).

Methodology : This is a descriptive cross-sectional study with a prospective collection of data extending over a period of three (03) months from 01 May to 31 July 2020.

Results : During our study period we recorded 305 obstetric emergency cases out of a total admission of 976 or 31.2%. The mean age of the patients was 25.8 ± 7 years with extremes of 14 and 45 years. The mean number of procedures was 3.6 ± 2, and the mean parity was 2.58 ± 2.4. The major groups of obstetric emergencies identified were: Fetal emergencies 26.9%, hemorrhagic emergencies (obstetric hemorrhages) 23.3%, hypertensive emergencies 15.4%, anemic emergencies 13.44%, obstructed labor 9, 5%; some patients developed complications after admission. Anemic and infectious complications were the most common. We deplored 4 maternal deaths, i.e. a maternal mortality rate of 1.3% and a perinatal mortality rate of 16.6%. The mean length of hospital stay was 6.9 days with extremes of 0 and 31 days.

Conclusion: Obstetric emergencies are frequent in the gynecology and obstetrics department of the CHUR/ OHG and responsible for high maternal and fetal mortality.
